Introduction to Wellness
Bill Hettler established the concept of an overall well-being in the 1970s, and it is more relevant today than ever before. ASCHP and wellness counsellors refer to this type of counselling as holistic.
Interconnected
It is widely held and supported by scientific evidence that many factors contribute to our general well-being, and the theory underlying CBT therapy is built on the concept of interconnection.
Mind Body & Spirit
Mind, body, and spirit are universal concepts that are even taught in theology. This concept is fully embraced by highly qualified counsellors working in the field of holistic wellbeing.
Is to provide emotional breathing space for pent up feelings and emotions or relief from negative feelings and emotions.
Standard method of counselling approach that is interactive and engaging with warmth rather than passive, cold and distant.
Enhancing one's overall emotional wellness through training and skill development which is a long-term strategy.
Seven pillars that contribute to our total emotional well-being and happiness. The foundation of holistic counselling.
Holistic Counselling
For ASCHP-registered counsellors like me who practise professionally, holistic wellbeing is the cornerstone. Its goal is to complement, not to replace, the mental and emotional health sector. It's intriguing to learn that the Health Professions Council of South Africa, HPCSA, fully supports ASCHP registered counsellors.
Why Holistic
The term "holistic" has numerous meanings and is used broadly for a variety of things, but it also refers to a specific kind of counsellor or counselling technique that looks at the individual as a whole rather than treating a symptom.
A holistic counsellor will consider numerous factors that may contribute to anger, anxiety, or depression, as well as managing difficult emotional challenges caused by trauma or conflict.
Wellness Wheel
The Wellness Wheel distinguishes holistic counsellors from others, and it serves as the framework for holistic wellness counselling. They observe the seven pillars of general emotional wellness, which are: physical, intellectual, environmental, occupational, social, emotional, and spiritual.
Quality of Life
ASCHP registered counsellors are professional counsellors making use of talk therapy and skill development and only work within the field of overall wellness hence the term “Holistic”. This is ideal for trauma recovery, bereavement and relapse prevention. ASCHP counsellors don't treat conditions, they seek to enhance your quality of life.
The Holistic Wellness Approach
Every counsellor is unique, and they all have their own methods and styles for providing counselling. As a professional counsellor operating within the comprehensive framework of ASCHP, I am leveraging my inborn abilities while blending them with my formal counselling education.
Talk Therapy
Talk therapy is one of the main components of counselling, if you look at my counselling toolbox. Talk therapy is much more than just a counselee airing their bad emotions or worries while a counsellor listens and responds as needed.
In talk therapy, I and someone engage in highly skilled interactive communication. When I listen to someone explain their emotional struggles, I take a lot of factors into consideration. Emotions and feelings seem to have their own language.
Now, feelings and their action tend to override the kind of logical reasoning that one would need to complete tasks in a work environment. In order to interrupt the pattern of deeply felt attachments to negative concepts, talk therapy can be helpful.
Emotional Intelligence
While talk therapy is great for recovering from trauma, coping with loss, anxiety, depression, and other unpleasant emotions, you should also think about developing your emotional intelligence by picking up new skills and finding constructive methods to handle obstacles in life.
The four pillars of emotional intelligence—self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills—are ideal for the holistic wellness approach. It can help you in many aspects of your life, both personally and professionally.
Secondly, for what reason is emotional intelligence so crucial? It provides you with the know-how and resources to raise your standard of living. The cornerstone of holistic wellness.
Environmental
Ultimately, the goal of holistic wellness is to improve your quality of life, but since we have little control over our surroundings, living in them can present many challenges. On the other hand, we are in charge of our own thoughts and behaviours.
We don't have to feel helpless, even though our feelings and emotions sometimes seem to control us. We have the power to motivate ourselves and those around us to strive harder. Nobody can survive in a poisonous atmosphere.
Combining talk therapy theory with emotional intelligence gives us two extremely potent tools at our disposal. the drive, wisdom, and ability to positively impact others and your surroundings.
